After a couple of weeks with a french friend who has now come out as non-binary, I got a small taste of what it was like living in a gendered country. Everything is either masculine (il) or feminine (elle) and there isn't much room for elements that don't conform to those two genders. The non-binary community has come up with yel/yelle as a translation for 'they' and 'them'. This seemed like the perfect opportunity to create a glyph that merges the i and e, creating the /y/ sound.
